But one of Rogue One's writers believes that Star Wars films might not always be so reliant on the older characters that hooked many in the first place.
Initially Gareth, a hardcore Star Wars fan, was like 'You've gotta have an opening crawl.' We wanted to have all the things we grew up with. Cassian (who had a different name in Whitta's draft of the script) also survived.
"The next spin-off is 'Han Solo, ' that's another familiar character, but I think increasingly you're going to see" less of the originals, said Whitta. But don't get too freaked out just yet, he's talking about films that'll be made in 10 or 20 years, which still leaves plenty of time for all of our favorite old-school characters to show up in numerous films.
But then we discover that Jyn and Cassian were able to get away in an escape pod just before Vader destroyed the ship they were on. The ship-to-ship data transfer happened off Scarif. Both Whitta and his successor as writer on the project, Chris Weitz, felt the team needed to die - and that the "writing gods" were making it hard for them to survive.
If you felt like Rogue One - a film that included several action sequences, one of Darth Vader's baddest moments and a CGI Princess Leia - was missing something, it must've been an opening crawl. "I feel that in our film, in much in the same way Jyn\u0027s trying to redeem hers, by completing the job that he started".
What we do know is this, the early draft of the crawl was written without the intention of it ever making the final cut, and it has the same word count as the original crawl for Star Wars:A New Hope. Snooze. Thankfully, as Whitta himself tellsEntertainment Weekly, everyone knew it was a bad ending, and it never made it to the next draft. Sorry K-2SO fans, looks like your favorite smart-droid didn't make it out. And one real, fast, brutal solution was to put the tower in the base, so they don't have to run across the beach and do all of that stuff to get there. "You want to tell new stories". That was some of the reinvention that happened. Today, EW has some insight into more changes that occurred throughout the course of Rogue One's trip from script to screen, including details on the film's alternate (and happier) ending. On the one hand, because the majority of the main characters aren't featured in any of the other films, the success of this movie proves Whitta's point. For now, we'll make due with the fact that Edwards, Whitta, and everyone at Lucasfilm put the right ending over the safe ending.
CO2 stable for 3rd year despite global growth
While these results are positive, there is still a great to deal to be done to further slow the progress of climate change. Global emissions of carbon dioxide stayed constant for the third year in a row, despite a growth in the economy.
