Criminal charges are pending, Brayman said.

The incident occurred at the vehicle check point at 15th and E Streets N.W. It does not give access to the White House grounds, but only authorized vehicles are permitted to pass.

A man has been detained after jumping a bike rack near the White House fence.

"The Secret Service can not even keep one person off the grounds - what will they do if 40 terrorists charge the White House?" former Secret Service Agent Dan Bongino said Friday on Fox News.

Then, just before midnight, Sean Patrick Keoughan drove a "suspicious" vehicle to a security checkpoint near the White House and stated "there's a bomb in the trunk" while clasping something in his hand, the Secret Service reported.

The police said Sean Patrick Keoughan, 29, of Roanoke was charged with false bomb threats, as well as unauthorized use of a vehicle. "Great response by @SecretService" Spicer tweeted.

After that incident, it was reported that the president was not in the White House, but had gone to Florida.

Earlier Saturday someone jumped a low metal barrier just outside a White House fence.

Rep. Jason Chaffetz, a Republican from Utah, said it should not be possible to scale the fence. "We've got a lot of good men and women who are working hard there", Chaffetz said.

"And yet the person is able to get up close to the White House and spend 17 minutes before he's apprehended".

The security posture at the White House has returned to normal, the sources said.

Tran faces up to 10 years in prison for the intrusion, the latest in a series of high-profile failures within the Secret Service.
