Downing Street expects that in the immediate aftermath of triggering Article 50, the remaining 27 European Union member states will agree terms and give an initial response within 48 hours.

"We are on the threshold of the most important negotiation for this country for a generation", Davis said.

The UK's ambassador to the EU, Sir Tim Barrow, formally informed EU Council president Donald Tusk this morning to expect May's letter next Wednesday.

From there, May's spokesman said negotiations should begin "promptly".

"Everything is ready on this side", commission spokesman Margaritis Schinas said.

After the 27 leaders agree on the guidelines, the European Union commission will, 24 hours later, put forward the formal recommendation for the negotiating directives.

Mrs May says she will trigger the process by the end of the month. Rather like flying, people will tolerate some turbulence so long as they can trust a predictable system.

The Brexit divorce is expected to take 16 to 18 months from March (although this is simply guesswork), which could mean Britain officially Brexits at the start of 2019.

The European Parliament also wants a say, and will have to approve the final deal between Britain and the bloc.

"The German vehicle industry said we don't want any disruption of trade". A response from the group is expected in around 48 hours after the UK's notification, according to European Commission negotiator Michel Barnier.

May on Monday began a tour of Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland aimed at boosting support for Brexit. "@GOVUK somehow forgot to inform us".

Both sides would like the early resolution of the status of more than three million Europeans living in Britain, and more than one million Britons living elsewhere in the EU. The legal process therein prevents formal negotiations for the proposed exit until after the British government officially informs the European Union of its intent.

The Institute for Government said in a report titled "Legislating Brexit" that the extra 15 measures would cover areas including immigration, agriculture and customs. Britain is now more divided at home and isolated overseas.

The Prime Minister was in Wales today on a pre-Brexit tour of the United Kingdom created to show she is listening to the views of every region. She has rushed this through without a plan, and without a clue.

The developments come as an independent think tank warned today that up to 15 new bills could be needed to deliver Brexit.
