A sad loss The blonde Italian is seen here with Gianni who built the Versace empire in the 1990s in NYC

Deadline broke the news on Monday after teasing the casting for the iconic blonde Italian fashion designer for several weeks. Versace will focus on the 1997 murder of Donatella's brother, Gianni, in Miami. Darren Criss plays the icon's killer Andrew Cunanan. Filming is set to begin in April and the series is expected to air in 2018, after a second installment of Crime Story centered on Hurricane Katrina.

The anthology will have 10 episodes. "But I would love to work with her on something in the future". In 2006, Penélope starred in Volver, for which she won the "Best Actress" awards at the European Film Awards, the Spanish Goya Awards, the Cannes Film Festival, and received both Golden Globe and Oscar nominations, and Elegy.

It was reported in November that Lady Gaga was going to play Donatella, but that has turned out to not be true.

We already knew that Lady Gaga won't be playing Donatella Versace in American Crime Story Season 3, but now we know who will: Oscar victor Penelope Cruz will portray the fashion executive and designer on Ryan Murphy's series, People confirmed. He's also behind "Feud: Bette and Joan", now airing on FX. In her US television debut, Cruz will star opposite previously casted stars Edgar Ramirez and Darren Criss as designer Gianni Versace and serial killer Andrew Cunana, respectively.

Versace: American Crime Story will see screenwriter Rom Rob Smith (Child 44, London Spy) episodically adapt Maureen Orth's 1999 book Vulgar Favors, also serving as an executive producer alongside Nina Jacobson, Brad Simpson, Brad Falchuk, and, of course, the brand's primary visionary in Ryan Murphy.
