By Staff Reporter| Legendary South African actor and singer Joe Mafela has died

The Highway Mail team sends our condolences to the friends and family of the beloved entertainer.

Mafela was also an global acclaimed songwriter, best-known for his track "Shebeleza", which was used as the theme song for the 1996 Africa Cup of Nations.

He received a host of industry lifetime achievement awards, including a Comics' Choice Award, a Duku Duku black entertainment award and a Naledi theatre award. "Mafela played a huge role in the development of acting talent in this country‚" the party said.

However, he will be most remembered for playing the character of Sdumo on the isiZulu sitcom Sgudi 'Snaysi, which was very popular in the 1980s and early 90s.

Arts and Culture Minister Nathi Mthethwa tweeted the country's condolences, saying: "We are shocked and deeply saddened to learn about the news of the passing of legendary...ubaba Joe Mafela". He featured in several South African movies and television programmes which saw him grab several awards for his accolades. "But he was also a producer‚ a director‚ an advertising director and a musician".


Mafela was born in Sibasa, Limpopo, and raised in Kliptown and Tshiawelo, Soweto.

He won numerous awards, including a Loerie for his advertising work and an SA Film and Television award (Safta) for best actor in a comedy.

Most recently Mafela starred as Tebogo Moroka in Generations: The Legacy.

About his sustained success, in an interview he once said: "Acting was never about fame and money".

"At the moment we have not finalised or started even talking about funeral arrangements", said Milicent Mulelo.
