ED attaches assets worth Rs 18 crore of Zakir Naik-led IRF

On March 16, the Delhi High Court had upheld the Centre's decision to immediately ban Zakir Naik's Islamic Research Foundation (IRF), saying the organisation and its president and members were indulging in "unlawful activity".

The attachment includes mutual fund worth Rs. 9.41 crore of Naik's IRF, a godown worth Rs. 68 lakh belonging to M/s Harmony media private limited and a school building worth Rs 7.05 crore belonging to Islamic Education Trust in Chennai.

An accused of the Bhopal blast case along with two others have claimed to be inspired from his speeches, in which he used to speak against Hindu Gods.

"Due to the said reason, the trust/organisation IRF has been banned under the provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967", it said in a statement.

The NIA is probing several cases against Naik.

The ED is looking into the charges of alleged laundering of illegal funds in the case and the subsequent proceeds of crime thus generated.

Naik who is now in Saudi Arabia is the founding trustee of the Islamic Research Foundation which was banned by the Home Ministry recently.

Earlier, he was asked to appear before the investigation officer in a summon under Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). the agency had wanted to record his statement who continues to be in overseas. The foundation was earlier put on "restricted list" by the Home Ministry for receiving funds from overseas.

The51-year old scholar is believed to be now residing in Saudi Arabia to evade arrest over accusations that he had inspired suspects involved in a attack in Bangladeshi capital Dhaka.
