Around 20 Local Companies Hope to Send Proposals for Border Wall

The company has been viewed as a potential beneficiary of President Trump's plans, but Cemex has come under intense pressure at home to boycott the multi-billion-dollar project. One was for a solid concrete barrier, the other called for a similar structure containing see-through openings, apparently for border guards' use.

The southern border wall will be physically imposing, hard to penetrate, and aesthetically pleasing from the northern side.

"The wall shall prevent/deter for a minimum of 1 hour the creation of a physical breach of the wall (e.g., punching through the wall) larger than 12 inches (30 cm) in diameter or square using sledgehammer, auto jack, pickaxe, chisel, battery-operated impact tools, battery-operated cutting tools, oxy/acetylene torch or other similar hand-held tools", it said. Among other things, the wall is to be a 30-foot-high structure that is to look good from the American side of the wall and discouraging from the Mexican side of the border.

CBP said Friday it intends to award multiple contracts, acquire numerous wall designs and build multiple prototypes through two requests for proposals published on the FedBizOpps website. The agency previously called for would-be bidders to submit concept designs by March 10, but it was not clear whether any were submitted. Contract winners will be based on sample walls built in San Diego.

Mr Trump has long promised Mexico would pay for the wall, which he has said is necessary to stop the flow of immigrants crossing the border illegally and drug smugglers. A preliminary version of the president's budget for government for fiscal 2018, beginning in October, was sent to Congress this week, and it included $2.6 billion for the beginning of wall construction.

And the newspaper said the Department of Homeland Security has estimated the wall will cost $21 billion to complete.

That report proposed an initial phase that would extend fences 26 miles and a second wave that would add 151 miles, plus 272 "replacement" miles where fences are already installed, according to the official.

The number of border arrests dropped around 44 per cent from January to February, the lowest monthly tallies since at the least the start of the 2012 budget year, the Department of Homeland Security reported earlier this month.
