Brian Wilson on Chuck Berry: 'He Taught Me How to Write Rock'

Chuck Berry

Slash, the Guns N' Roses guitarist, said he was "heartbroken" by the news, and that Berry was "undisputedly the king".

It will be the star's first new album for 38 years, and will be "comprised primarily of new, original songs".

"If you had tried to try and give rock "n" roll another name, you might call it 'Chuck Berry, '" the estate of John Lennon said, recalling the words Lennon himself used to introduce Berry on a TV show in 1972.

The 90-year-old Berry was found dead Saturday at his home in St. Charles County, Missouri.

Berry was born into a middle-class family, but had to overcome an early run-in with the law when he did time in a reformatory in the 1940s for an armed robbery conviction. As Marty and The Starlighters performed this literally ahead-of-its-time song, injured guitarist Marvin Berry called his "cousin" and got him in on the ground level of that new sound that he himself had already invented. Rock and roll as we know it would not exist without him.

Just let me hear some of that rock "n" roll music any old way you use it I am playing I'm talking about you.

Chuck Berry has passed away at the age of 90.

Keith Richards famously said he lifted all of Berry's licks.

Berry's singular influence on Music City was formally recognized in 1982, when he was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame.

Chuck Berry's death came just weeks before the debut single off his first new studio album in almost four decades was scheduled to go on sale, a friend of the rock "n" roll legend said.

Berry and Johnson collaborated for some 30 years on such rock anthems as School Days, Roll Over Beethoven, Back in the U.S.A., Reelin' and Rockin', Rock & Roll Music, No Particular Place to Go, Memphis and Sweet Little Sixteen. "After they laughed at me a few times they began requesting the hillbilly stuff and enjoyed dancing to it".

Berry's signature duck walk was adopted by the likes of admiring bands such as The Who and AC/DC. "Rock on brother! instagram.com/p/BRzBbf0Fo5c/".

These among the Berry teens who became popular musicians played his music themselves, even admitting their efforts were their pale imitations of what they heard Berry doing.
