FBI chief expected to deny wiretapping claim Dem says

FBI Director James Comey publicly confirmed for the first time that the FBI is investigating Russia's efforts to interfere in the 2016 presidential election, including potential coordination between Trump campaign associates and Russia's government. They'll also be asked about allegations Trump made that President Obama tapped Trump Tower during the 2016 election. "But it is also possible, maybe more than possible, that they are not coincidental, not disconnected and not unrelated, and that the Russians used the same techniques to corrupt US persons that they have employed in Europe and elsewhere". The House Intelligence Committee will hear from FBI Director James Comey on whether USA officials believe Russian Federation tried to bolster Trump's chances in the election and if there were any connections between Moscow and Trump's campaign aides.

Typically, the FBI does not discuss or even confirm the existence of ongoing investigations.

On Sunday, the top Democrat on the intel committee, Rep. Adam Schiff (D-California) claimed, contrary to Clapper, that there is evidence of collusion.

The Senate's top Democrat says that President Donald Trump "severely damaged his credibility" with Twitter postings claiming that former President Barack Obama ordered wiretaps of him. The first public hearing in a congressional investigation into Russian interference in the presidential election opens with a hearing featuring FBI Director James Comey and the head of the National Security Agency.

The same was true, he added, of the Justice Department. "I don't think we've ever encountered a more aggressive or direct campaign to interfere in our election than we've seen in this case".

Mr Nunes said: "For the first time, the American people, and all the political parties now, are paying attention to the threat that Russian Federation poses".

Last week, White House spokesman Sean Spicer turned to a Fox News analyst's contention GCHQ had helped Mr Obama wiretap Trump Tower. They're not likely to hear dissent from committee members on that score.

Earlier at the hearing, he confirmed publicly for the first time that the FBI is investigating possible collusion between the Trump campaign and the Russian government.

Any lack of detail from Mr Comey would likely be contrasted with public comments he made a year ago when closing out an investigation into Mrs Clinton's email practices and then, shortly before election day, announcing that the probe would be revived following the discovery of additional emails.
