Beauty and the Beast roars to record-breaking $170M debut
I must admit that before I watched this movie I remembered very little about the classic 1991 animated film that "Beauty and the Beast" is based on. Trade Analyst Taran Adarsh shared, " What's noteworthy is, the opening weekend biz of #BeautyAndTheBeast is nearly three times higher than #Cinderella, #Moana and #Zootopia".
Overseas, the updated version of the classic 1991 animated musical has also delighted fans, earning $180 million to deliver a global total of $350 million.
It follows Alice in Wonderland, which grossed US$1 billion worldwide, Cinderella with US$543.5 million, and last year's The Jungle Book, which racked up US$966.6 million, Variety.com reports.
Emma Watson, Dan Stevens, Josh Gad, Luke Evans, Kevin Kline, Hattie Morahan, Ewan McGregor, Ian McKellen, Emma Thompson, Nathan Mack, Audra McDonald, Stanley Tucci, and Gugu Mbatha-Raw along with the supporting characters spin the old animated characters in a new and refreshing way yet keeps their essence.
As if that weren't enough, the film beat a number of other records as well, according to T.H.R.-including the best domestic opening ever for a PG film, handily beating out Finding Dory, which opened with $135 million previous year.
Beauty and the Beast is Disney's best live-action remake so far and a fun film for all the family to see. $170 million places it as the seventh biggest opener ever, per Mojo.
The actress, a six-time Tony Award victor, was just starting out when she auditioned for a minor part in the theatre adaptation of the hit animated movie musical - and she failed to catch the eye of Disney composer Alan Menken.
Lastly, Get Out's extraordinary run appears to be winding down as it's down a still awesome 38% from last Friday to $3.7 million.
Other studios stayed clear of the Disney juggernaut. With the massive recent success of La La Land (more than US$417 million in worldwide sales), it proves that escapist song-and-dance fantasy still sells, even in countries that haven't traditionally responded to the format. It also is the seventh-highest grossing opening weekend of all time. $170m of that has come from the U.S. alone, and with competition for the family movie dollar sparse until The Smurfs turn up, Disney might just be looking at a $1bn movie here.

In Edinburgh, Nicola Sturgeon said she would be "up for" a discussion with May about the timing of a new independence referendum. But the SNP says the political landscape has dramatically changed since then, requiring another vote within the next two years.
